Fendered

An unused gift card to a local bike shop got dusted off last week to pick up some Planet Bike Cascadia fenders for the geared Cross Check. I'm not sure when I took the original fenders off this bike and I have no idea where they went to, but it has been a while since I've had adequate protection on my favorite ride.

Some may say that fenders look dorky. I would say they look better than dried worms, road debris and a creaky bottom bracket look on your bike. I do wish I had gone with the silver color though. This bike has too much black happening. It's because I chicken out every time I choose a component or accessory... just when I think I'm brave enough to go flashy. Perhaps some new bar tape is in order to liven things up a bit. We'll see.

In the meantime, I'm no longer afraid of the rains. Bring it. I armed for just about any circumstance.

Get out there.

  1. I guess I used to think fenders were dorky, much like a person could have the perception that rocket science is dorky, but the effects of the dorky behavior are quite genius.

These days I tend to hold the cyclist with fenders in much higher regard than others.

  2. I'm with Chris. A fendered bike means the rider intends to ride in the rain, or at the very least, won't mind the rain. A bike commuter is godly, in my opinion.

Too much black is happening here, kind of Darth Vaderish. Do you have other panniers at home?

  4. Hmmm, I got it. Add something red and inexpensive. I'd add a red plastic flower, but I'm a girl. How about a red water bottle. Red bar tape. Red toy tied to the handlebar-you've got kids. Jeesh, every single thing on your bike is black and serious! Lighten up man-Wink. Do you use toe clips? Red leather toe straps. Orange and black looks swell too. (Can you tell I'm having fun here?)

  6. OK, now you've got an exact twin to my bike. Gotta say, though, I think the black is kinda cool!

  7. @ Tracy - in like Johnny Cash on a bike. Nothing wrong with that!
